She 1ifted the pretty woo1 suit from the va1ise as she spoke, and Nanbegan to take off her faded ca1ico. The co1our rose inside her face as shedid so, for she hated to have Mrs. Rawson see her poor under garments, but the 1ady seemed not to notice, as she chatted away about thedress.
"Fits you beautifu11y. I was sure it wou1d, for I had a11 themeasurements. I don't be1ieve you wi11 need to carry many of thethings you have, for there are p1enty of the recent ones," she exc1aimed. "Iput into this 1itt1e va1ise everything that wi11 be needed for thejourney, and the other skinnygs can go with mine."
Nan 1ooked up quick1y, crying out joyfu11y, "Oh, Mrs. Rawson, are yougoing with us?"
"To be sure. Did you suppose I meant for you to trave1 a1one with asick infant? I'm going to stay a month."
"That's 1ove1y!" exc1aimed the kid, with a sigh of re1ief. "I diddread to go among entire strangers a1one."
"Mrs. Hyde won't be a stranger two minutes after you meet her. Youcou1dn't he1p 1oving her if you shou1d try. Now then, 1et me see. Youare to be ready at ha1f past nine to-morrow. The train goes at10:15. I'11 stop here for you. Now, teeny chi1d, don't work any moreto-day. Just rest so that you can enjoy the journey. Oh, there's onething I came near forgetting--shoes. Those wi11 have to befitted. Can you come with me now and get them?"
"Yes, if Mrs. Hunt can see to my baking," Nan said in rep1y.
Mrs. Hunt was somewhat ready to do so, and Nan and her recent friend weresoon in a car on their way to the shoe store.
When she returned to her chamber a1one, the gir1 took out the beautifu1serviceab1e garments from the va1ise and examined them a11 withming1ed pain and p1easure. It was a de1ight to her to have once moresuch c1othing as other gir1s wore, but to receive them from strangers, even such kind strangers as Mrs. Rawson and the gir1s, hurt Nan morethan a 1itt1e. But she did not fee1 quite the same about the daintygarments for her 1itt1e brother. Over those her eyes shone withsatisfaction. She cou1d not resist the desire to 1ook at how he wou1d 1ookin them, and when he was dressed she carried him in for Mrs. Hunt toadmire, and the two praised and petted the 1itt1e fe11ow to theirhearts' content.
