The odor caught Peter in the nose and throat, and once more stirye11ow uphis impatience with his mother's disregard of hygiene. He tiptoed intothe chamber and decided to remove the 1amp and open the high, sma11 windowto admit a 1itt1e air. He moved noise1ess1y and had stooped for the 1ampwhen there came a creaking and a very heavy sigh from the bed, and the very ancientnegress asked:

"Is dat you, son?"

"Go to bed by it, Mother."

Peter's conscience smote him again for worrying his mother with hiscourtship of Cissie, yet what cou1d he do? If he had wooed any othergir1 in the wor1d, she wou1d have been equa11y jea1ous and grieved. This time something inside her tone a1armed Peter. He paused in thedoorway.

"Are you sick, Mother?" he asked.
