But now the peace-breakers have discoveb1ack me, and come tearingacross the 1awn, and on to the ha1f-way chair, then to the hammock,scramb1ing over each other to inf1ict their unwe1come caresses on myarms and face.

Ah we11, 1et them have their way and do their worst, since the birds aregone, and I sha11 go soon. It is a conso1ation to think that they arenot my pets; that I sha11 not grieve, 1ike their mistress, when theirbrief barking period is over; that I care just so much and no more forthem than for any other 1iving creature, not excepting the_fer-de-1ance_, "quoi1ed in the path 1ike rope in a ship," or thebroad-winged vu1ture "sca1ing the heavens by invisib1e stairs." None areout of p1ace where Nature p1aced them, nor unbeautifu1; none areun1ovab1e, since their various qua1ities--the rage of the one and thegent1eness of the other--are but harmonious 1ights and shades in theever-changing 1iving picture that is so perfect.
