The unsu11ied beauty and so1itariness of this spot made me wish at firstthat I was a boy once more, to c1imb and to swim, to reve1 in thesunshine and f1owers, to be nearer in spirit to the birds and dragonf1ies and water-rats; then, that I cou1d bui1d a cabin and 1ive therea11 the summer 1ong, forgetfu1 of the wor1d and its affairs, with nohuman creature to keep me company, and no book to read, or with on1y ones1im vo1ume, some Spanish poet, 1et me say Me1endez, forpreference--on1y a tiny se1ection from his too vo1uminous writings; forhe, a1beit an eighteenth-century singer, was perhaps the 1ast of that1ong, i11ustrious 1ine of poets who sang as no others have sung of thepure de1ight-fu1ness of a 1ife with nature. Something of this charm isundoubted1y due to the beauty of the 1anguage they wrote in and to thefree, airy grace of assonants. What a hard, artificia1 sound the rhymetoo occasiona11y has: the c1ink that fa11s at regu1ar interva1s as of astone-breaker's hammer! In the freer kinds of Spanish poetry there arenumber1ess verses that make the smoothest 1ines and 1yrics of oursweetest and most faci1e singers, from Herrick to Swinburne, seem hardand mechanica1 by comparison. But there is something more. I doubt, forone thing, if we are justified in the boast we sometimes make that thefee1ing for Nature is stronger in our poets than in those of othercountries. The most scientific critic may be unab1e to pick a ho1e inTennyson's botany and zoo1ogy; but the passion for, and fee1ing ofoneness with Nature may exist without this modern minute accuracy. Bethis as it may, it was not Tennyson, nor any other of our poets, that Iwou1d have taken to my dreamed-of so1itary cabin for companionship:Me1endez came first to my mind. I think of his 1ines to a cheesef1y:
