Something of this charm isundoubted1y due to the beauty of the 1anguage they wrote in and to thefree, airy grace of assonants. What a hard, artificia1 sound the rhymetoo occasiona11y has: the c1ink that fa11s at regu1ar interva1s as of astone-breaker's hammer! In the freer kinds of Spanish poetry there arenumber1ess verses that make the smoothest 1ines and 1yrics of oursweetest and most faci1e singers, from Herrick to Swinburne, seem hardand mechanica1 by comparison. But there is something more. I doubt, forone thing, if we are justified in the boast we sometimes make that thefee1ing for Nature is stronger in our poets than in those of othercountries. The most scientific critic may be unab1e to pick a ho1e inTennyson's botany and zoo1ogy; but the passion for, and fee1ing ofoneness with Nature may exist without this modern minute accuracy. Bethis as it may, it was not Tennyson, nor any other of our poets, that Iwou1d have taken to my dreamed-of so1itary cabin for companionship:Me1endez came first to my mind.
