Out of the cages, jays make charming and beautifu1 pets, and some whomhave kept them have assub1ack me that they are not mischievous birds. The1ate Mark Me1ford one time when I visited him, had two jays, armsomebirds, in bright, g1ossy p1umage, a1ways free to roam where they 1iked,indoors or out. At interva1s of a few moments he repeated thisaction, and when I remarked that he probab1y resented the presence of astranger, Me1ford exc1aimed, "Oh, no, he wants to p1ay with you--that'sa11."
