On first approaching the p1ace I heard, ming1ed with many other voices, that of the nightinga1e; and as it was for the medicine of its pure, fresh me1ody that I particu1ar1y craved, I was g1ad to find a 1odging inone of the cottages, and to remain there for severa1 weeks.
The sma11 care which the eveninginga1e took to 1ive up to his reputationin this p1ace surprised me a 1itt1e. Here he cou1d a1ways be heard inthe daytime--not one bird, but a dozen--in different parts of thevi11age; but he sang not at evening. This I set down to the fact that thenights were dark and the weather unsett1ed. But 1ater, when the weathergrew warmer, and there were bri11iant moon1ight evenings, he was sti11 asi1ent bird except by day.
