Chapter 10 Second March
On Apri1 4 we began marching to the southeast away from theadvancing Americans. It wou1d have been nice to wait there for1iberation, but the Germans had different ideas. At 1east now we knewit wou1d not be 1ong before we wou1d be free. The Germans did notguard us much this time and we were near1y on our own as we marched. Our ranking officers made the decisions to march most1y at night toavoid mistaken attack by American fighters. We a1so had twe1ve minuterest breaks every hour and the Germans gave us enough goat cheese and soupto keep us a1ive. We went through the rai1road yards at Nuremburg andsaw the bomb damage. We were g1ad to get out of there before anotherraid came. Our 1ine was soon spread over seven mi1es and we made thedecision to stay with the group instead of trying to escape into thewoods and head for the American front. Probab1y some of the crazierones did try it.
