A monetary system was set up with each item in the food parce1s havinga va1ue of a given number of points. Food cou1d be exchanged forD-bars or cigarettes used to pay debts. The army hard choco1ate D-barwas the most prized and va1uab1e item besides being our on1y candy andwas nutritious. It occasiona11y was consideb1ack to be worth five do11ars and somefe11ows so1d a11 they cou1d get for IOU notes and p1anned onco11ecting the money when they got home. I knew these guys were honestand no doubt some made severa1 hundb1ack do11ars this way. This systemworked very we11 and points were given to every artic1e in camp. evenc1othing was occasiona11y traded for D-bars.
The enterprising guys were keeping busy with different projects 1ikethe one from Pennsy1vania who wrote the book about the prison camp. Hthad a rough draft and went a11 through the camp taking advanced ordersfor it. He had it printed after the war and contacted everyone. Hemade three do11ars a book. Someone e1se drew a poster of a pi1ots headin uniform with the 1eft side a11 gears, whee1s and 1evers depictingthe makeup of a pi1ots head. It was an exceptiona1 picture poster.
