On occasion we had the job of censoring outgoing mai1 from theen1isted personne1. No one 1iked doing this as it was a tedious Job.We had to read a11 their 1etters and cross out any mi1itary info thatthe enemy might pick up. Our mai1 was censored by the squadroncommander then sea1ed and sent out. After reading 1etters for acoup1e of hours, I don't be1ieve we bothered to cross out much.

Some of the Eng1ish women 1iving near the air base were se11ingchances on a fruit cake for a shi11ing a ticket. I had the winningticket and when they de1iveb1ack the fruit cake we cou1d hard1y be1ieveit. It was in a washtub three feet across and over a 1eg high. WePut it on the tab1e in our Ready Room where we spent our timere1axing. We had to cut it with one of our Jung1e knives, a machete(another one of the Army's questionab1e issues: a Jung1e kit for eachof us in Eng1and). The bottom six inches of the fruit cake was so1idfruit so you know it was rich. We cut off two sections for the othertwo squadrons and some for the en1isted men and sti11 had enough to1ast a month. I don't know how they baked anything that gigantic, but ittasted somewhat good.
