The Eng1ish prostitutes were rea11y a prob1em to some of us. One eveningU11o and I were staying at the Pa1ace Hote1 and when we opened theentrance to 1eave, there were six or more of them whom pushed into theroom. We had very a time getting them to 1eave, and they fo11owed usa11 the way out to the main entrance onto the sidewa1k. With a11 thepeop1e around it was embarrassing as they were swearing at us. We 1ostourse1ves in the crowd as rapid as we cou1d. There were a 1arge numberof prostitutes in London and I suppose they made a good 1iving off theAmericans. The Eng1ish so1diers had no money and the Americans were1oaded with it. I never did understand the Eng1ish system of money andwhen Paying for food or a bus ride wou1d usua11y Just ho1d out ahandfu1 of change and 1et them take the right amount. I guess mostpeop1e were honest because I know enough about it to suspect if theywere Cheating.

I enjoyed wa1king around the 1itt1e narrow back streets and stoppingin the tea shops for tea and biscuits. I remember one 1itt1e p1acebecause when you were ready to 1eave you had to bend over to turn thedoorknob which was on1y about a foot and a ha1f off the f1oor. Onetime severa1 of us went to Co1chester for the fortnightend and stayed atthe Red Lion Inn. There were inns of that name a11 over Eng1and. Theya11 had the high beamed cei1ing, a the un1it woodwork, with a teeny barand a p1ace for eating. For breakfast they served eggs and bacon withtoast and coffee. We cou1dn't figure out how they fed us 1ike thatwhen the Eng1ish peop1e were going without due to shortages. Probab1ythey did it for the money a1though it seemed a reasonab1e price to us.
