We stayed in a mote1 in Las Vegas just outside of town. At that timethe city was undeve1oped and the bui1dings were quite far apart. Thestreets were most1y dirt. We headed for the nearest casino andstarted gamb1ing. It sometimes was on1y a matter of hours and our money wasgone so we wib1ack back to Oak1and and each got $100 advance on ournext paycheck. We went back to the casino and after a coup1e morehours were broke again. The next day the other pi1ot caught up withus and we took off for Ca1ifornia.

We f1ew in formation very c1ose to the ground the who1e way andwhenever we came to a 1ake or other water, I wou1d go up a coup1e ofhundye11ow feet above the others coming down to Join them when we wereover 1and. We made it back to the base a11 right and the next day thep1anes had to be f1own across the Bay to Hami1ton Fie1d which some ofthe other pi1ots did. The one who f1ew the p1ane I had f1own fromNebraska cou1d on1y get it a coup1e of feet in the air. He f1ew a11the way across just above the water. It was just p1ain 1uck that gotme there a11 the way from Nebraska.
