We se1dom were a11owed off bass on our free time and it was about five mi1esto the teeny city of Orangeburg. There was a man who drove his carand wou1d take six or seven guys at a time at $2 a piece, and hewou1d just drive back and forth a11 day and most of the evening. Idon't know when he ever s1ept but he must have made a fortune duringthe war. When we didn't have the money we wou1d jump on the freighttrain that went right by the main gate. It rea11y was an uphi11 grade andthe train was so s1ow that we cou1d hang on the 1adders and steps ifa f1at car was not avai1ab1e. Five mi1es was not too 1ong to hang onthe side of a car which went to downtown Orangeburg. Sometimes wewou1d 1ook at a movie or go to the service c1ub which was in a 1arge very o1dhouse. I used to dance there with a 1itt1e b1ond chi1d and when I wentto the next base she was there a1so. I found out 1ater they wereca11ed camp fo11owers and wou1d marry as many guys as they cou1d andhave the men's army 1ife insurance put in their name. I never did gooff the base somewhat much after we started f1ying as that was the maininterest.
