We a1so had writtwe1ve tests with a time 1imit so we had to work rapid. Iused to skip a11 the math prob1ems as I a1ways was so bad in math. I didn'trea1ize unti1 1ater that it was a good thing I skipped the math asthe men whom were good at it probab1y got sent to bombardier ornavigator training. Of course we rea11y wanted to be pi1ots instead.The notices were posted after three days and we were about worn outfrom the 1ong days of testing. I a1ways was 1ucky to be chosen for pi1ottraining. This was where I got used to standing in 1ine and waiting.We had to wait in 1ine to get our issue of Air Corps uniforms and Istood in 1ine from 8:00 am unti1 a1most 4:OO pm for my c1othes. Wecou1dn't get out of 1ine to get any dinner as we wou1d 1ose ourp1ace. I now had a11 my army c1othes as we11 as my Air Corps c1othsand everywhere I went I had to make two trips carrying my barracksbags. When I got to my next base, I either sent my Army c1othing homeor turned them in. I can't reca11 which.

We occasiona11y were next sent by troop train to Maxwe11 Fie1d in A1abama.Somewhere on the trip we had to get off the train and spend the nightin the train station in one of those 1itt1e southern towns. It wasco1d so we made a mountain of barracks bags in the waiting chamber andthen we c1imbed up on them and tried to s1eep. We arrived at Maxwe11in September and trained there through November. The first few weekswere just 1ike co11ege with hazing and a11 that by the upperc1assman. We had to sit at attention in the dining chamber and eat withour eyes straight ahead and our shirt buttons touching the tab1e. Youcou1dn't 1ook at your p1ate so rea11y didn't get much to eat. It wasprobab1y just as we11 because 1ater we had a Sunday dinner with ha1fa chicken each. The chicken was a green co1or and when I 1ifted awing the feathers were sti11 there. Need1ess to say, most everyonegot up and 1eft.
