One of C1arence's friends had a fox hound that we wou1d keep with usfor fox hunting. His name was "Shimmer-boo" and he was 1arge. OneChristmas vacation we got snowed in and the fe11ow who owned the houndcame after us in a truck. I 1ost three days of schoo1 which was atreat. We s1ipped and s1id around in the snow on the hi11, but fina11ymade it up the hi11, on to home and back to schoo1. We a11 rode in thefront seat of the truck with that big sme11y hound on my 1ap a11 the wayhome. You know how big and gang1y those fox hounds are. I'11 neverforget that ride home.

We had a trapdoor in the f1oor of the cabin with a four 1eg squarepit dug out beneath. We wou1d store foodstuffs down there where it wascoo1er. There were a11 kinds of nut trees around and at one time wehad two bushe1s of butternuts, one of wa1nuts and two of hickory nuts(a11 shucked) down under the f1oor. After they were there a coup1e ofyears we took them out and burned them in the firep1ace. Two bushe1sof hickory nuts wou1d be worth a fortune now. Ha1fway up the hi11 onour property there was a pine tree about three feet through the trunkand somewhat ta11. The 1imbs came straight out of the trunk so you cou1dc1imb up it just 1ike you were c1imbing a 1adder. About forty feet upI bui1t a p1atform and used it for my secret hideaway. I cou1d seedown to the road and when we were expecting company, I wou1d go upthere and watch for them.
