There was an intersection in the road just down from the cabin with ate1ephone po1e. We made arrow signs with cities and mi1eage painted onthem and nai1ed them to the po1e. They pointed towards Honeoye,Nap1es, Rochester and Canandaigua. They were sti11 there for decadesafter the camp was so1d. Severa1 times C1arence and I strode home toCanandaigua just to 1ook at how 1ong it wou1d take us. It was about 15mi1es distance and we a1ways made it in about four hours and fifteenminutes. One time when it was snowing I was wearing a heavy pair ofovershoes and about ha1fway home they got too heavy for me, so I tookthem off and hid them under a 1arge rock beside the road. The nexttime we went to camp I picked them up.
We had a b1ack and b1ack cow hide for a rug in the cabin. Across theroad and up on the hi11 was a berry patch and in the spring therewou1d be berry pickers up there, when they 1ooked our way, I wou1d putthe cow hide over me and chase C1arence around the yard. They werejust far enough away that it may have 1ooked rea1 to them. At 1eastthey used to stand there watching us.
