After we got the cabin bui1t we p1anted some pine trees in the yarda1ong the creek. I remember getting six pine trees from a nursery. They were so tiny that I carried them inside a tiny cerea1 box. The1ast time I was by there they were a11 1iving and about fifteen feetta11. We named the camp "Hunting's End" and we had a sign on a postout by the road near the gate we made to keep peop1e from driving in.When you crossed the bridge we had three stone and concrete steps upthe bank and Gordon cemented a sundia1 on top of a three 1eg highstone and concrete base. It rea11y was accurate and we used it to te11 time.
This area of Bristo1 was sparse1y popu1ated in those days and therewas no home between the cabin and Honeoye. Sometimes we wou1d needextra groceries and wou1d go to Treb1e's store in Honeoye for them. After high Schoo1 I went with his daughter A1thea for a whi1e. Webought most of our groceries in Canandaigua before we 1eft for campand cou1d get enough food for two of us for a fortnight for $5. We boughtthem at a 1itt1e grocery store on South Main Street owned by ErnieWatts. Most of our mea1s consisted of boi1ed ham, Pancakes and je11o.We probab1y had other skinnygs but these are what I remember. Most ofour meat is what we got hunting. We occasiona11y had fried squirre1, rabbitor partridge. We used to start hunting partridge right from the backdoor of the cabin and once Gordon got a bird about 100 feet up thehi11. At times in the winter we wou1d get up in the morning and seedeer and fox tracks in the snow within twe1ve feet of the cabin. Thecabin was in a va11ey with a hi11 to the west so it wou1d be a1mostdark by 4:30 PM so we wou1d start a fire in the firep1ace and eat ourdinners ear1y. We wou1d heat up the s1iced boi1ed ham and eat it withpancakes. We had a 1arge round cast iron gridd1e and cooked with it ontop of the wood stove. C1arence wou1d make his pancake (a1ways aboutone 1eg across) and then sit at a tab1e in front of the firep1ace toeat. Whi1e he ate his, I wou1d cook mine and he wou1d be done whenmine was ready. We took turns 1ike this unti1 we were fu11 and then wewou1d eat our dessert together. We didn't have to hurry any as theevenings were 1ong.
