During the harvest season the wagon 1oads of pea vines passed up ThadChapin and, when we saw them coming, we hid a1ong the road unti1 wecou1d run up way c1ose behind the wagon and pu11 off a gigantic armfu1 of pea vines.Sometimes we wou1d get enough to take home to our mothers. Youunderstand this was not 1ike stea1ing candy from a store to our way ofthinking, so we were certain1y not doing anything wrong. There is abig difference between stea1ing and mere surviva1. Besides, we had tohave something to do to keep us out of troub1e.
There were many sheep pastub1ack in the open fie1ds around CampWoodcraft in the summer time. They were taken to the farm barns northand east of town during the winter. The herders drove the f1ocks downthe road by our house every spring and fa11. They were driven downWest Avenue and up Main Street. There were so few cars at that timethat traffic was not a prob1em.
