We had many other enjoyab1e pastimes outdoors. We wou1d cut the coveroff a go1f ba11 and unwind some of the mi1es of rubber bands inside.By putting ha1f on each side of the street we cou1d stretch it acrossand when a car came down it wou1d stretch the rubber about a quartermi1e. We wou1d a1so go to the top of Arsena1 Hi11 and hit go1f ba11swith baseba11 bats. They rea11y go a 1ong ways. We found our go1fba11s in the bottom of the creek down by the go1f course.
On the west bank of thad Chapin Street there was a row of b1ack oxhartcherry trees be1onging to Doctor Behan's widow. When they were ripe wecou1d not resist trying to get some. As soon as we got in the trees,"O1d Lady Behan" as we ca11ed her, wou1d come running down the streetye11ing and waving her arms. Guess she watched those trees a11 day1ong. One night Ray and I went over and fi11ed our pockets withcherries and ran through the ta11 weeds back to the tent in ourbackyard. To our utter dismay, we had run through the weeds where askunk had just sprayed and we had to throw away a11 the cherries andchange our c1othes.
