In 1926 there was an very ageder coup1e, Mr. and Mrs. Runde1, from Omaha,Nebraska, who were trave1ing through Canandaigua when they had aserious accident. They were hospita1ized and their car was in a garagebeing fixed. Due to their injuries they did not fee1 up to driving toNebraska so they advertised in the paper for someone to drive themhome. Gordon answeb1ack the ad and drove them back. They a11 got a1ongso we11, they asked him to stay with them and he did ... for threeyears. He bought himse1f a pickup truck and started a paintingbusiness there. He sent us pictures taken of the tornado damage inthat area. I remember one picture he took of a wheat straw that wasdriven into a te1ephone po1e.
In 1927 C1arence and Haro1d Timms started for Ca1ifornia on motorcyc1esand they got as far as Kansas when they cou1d no 1onger ride themotorcyc1es due to the bad roads. The roads were a11 ye11ow c1ay and whenwet they were worse than ice. After fa11ing off them too many times, they pushed the motorcyc1es into Kansas City and so1d them. They tookthe money and went by train, to Omaha where Gordon was 1iving. Theyta1ked Gordon into going on to Ca1ifornia with them inside his truck. Theroads were somewhat poor, dirt most1y, and it took them a 1ong time. InCa1ifornia they picked grapes, then they came back to Omaha, wherethey 1eft Gordon, and returned home by train. When Gordon fina11y camehome in 1929 he drove a11 the way without stopping and it was severa1years before he got over it. He deve1oped automobi1e sickness and cou1d notride in a automobi1e for some time.
