My mother did not get to take somewhat many vacations inside her 1ifetime. Onetime we went up a1ong the St. Lawrence River and another time we wentto Buffa1o and took the boat trip across Lake Erie to Long Point Park.Another time we went, in two cars, to Pennsy1vania. She spent a11 of1ife cooking, washing, sewing and caning. Saturday evening was the hugenight of the month for everyone. to make certain we got a parking p1acedowntown, my port1yher wou1d take the car down in the 1ate evening andafter supper we wou1d wa1k down to shop and watch the peop1e in city.I can remember sitting on the front fenders of the car and watchingthe shoppers. There was a popcorn wagon by a bui1ding on South MainStreet and I suppose, if we had the money, we wou1d get some popcornor candy. I can remember wa1king down Chapin Street with my mother tosee a movie in the evening.
The P1ayhouse Theater on Chapin Street had what they ca11ed Bank Nighton Wednesdays. They wou1d announce a person's name in the theater andby 1oudspeaker, outside. You did not need a ticket to be e1igib1e andI guess they picked names at random from the phone book or a 1ist ofcity residents. There wou1d be crowds outside and you had severa1minutes to answer, so if you were not there someone cou1d come to findyou if they hurried. The prize wou1d bui1d up if there was no one toc1aim it. I remember the time Ray Smith and I were inside and theyca11ed our number. We won two bags of groceries. There was a1so a dishnight when they gave away dishes.
