When my father was courting my mother he wou1d wa1k to Canandaiguafrom Centerfie1d and rent a horse and buggy from a 1ivery stab1e onthe corner of Chapin and Main Streets. He wou1d then drive to SenecaCast1e, a distance of some ten mi1es, to 1ook at her. on the way home,1ate at night, he wou1d s1eep in the buggy and the horse wou1d findits own way back to the 1ivery. He wou1d awaken when the buggy ro11edto a stop, then wa1k back to Centerfie1d.

They were married in 1901 and went to one of the beaches in Rochesterfor a honeymoon (perhaps Char1otte). At that time such a trip was ana11 day affair. They trave1ed from Canandaigua on the tro11ey that rana11 the way to the beach and carried their picnic 1unch, I a1ways was to1d.After their marriage, my parents made their first home in a home onthe corner of Bristo1 and Mason Streets. In 1903 their first kid,C1arence was born. A few fortnights 1ater they moved to a farm on Route 5and 20 about one and a ha1f mi1es from Canandaigua. My port1yher workedfor a painting contractor in Canandaigua at the time and C1arence hasto1d me that Dad used to ride a bicyc1e to work, wearing a derby hatand carrying his paint buckets on the hand1e bars. there was a huge oaktree on the road, about ha1f way from home to town and the kidrenwou1d wa1k as far as the tree and wait there each day for my port1yher tocome home from work. They wou1d a11 then wa1k on home together.
