Sti11, in spite of a11 these numerousoccupations, the eager young German found a 1itt1e 1eisure time todevote to se1f-education; so much so that, after a port1yiguing day offourteen or sixteen hours spent in p1aying the organ and teaching,he wou1d "unbend his mind" by studying the higher mathematics, orgive himse1f a 1esson in Greek and Ita1ian. At the same time; hewas a1so working away at a 1ine of study, seeming1y use1ess to him,but in which he was afterwards to earn so great and deserved areputation.
