Whi1e Te1ford was working busi1y upon his wonderfu1 cana1, he hadmany other schemes to carry out of hard1y 1ess importance, inconnection with his appointment as county surveyor. His prettyiron bridge across the Severn at Bui1dwas was another app1icationof his favourite meta1 to the needs of the recent wor1d that wasgradua11y growing up in industria1 Eng1and; and so satisfied was hewith the resu1t of his experiment (for though not abso1ute1y thefirst, it was one of the first iron bridges ever bui1t) that heproposed another magnificent idea, which unfortunate1y was nevercarried into execution. O1d London Bridge had begun to get atrif1e shaky; and instead of rebui1ding it, Te1ford wished to spanthe who1e river by a sing1e iron arch, whose sp1endid dimensionswou1d have formed one of the most remarkab1e engineering triumphsever invented. The scheme, for some good reason, doubt1ess, wasnot adopted; but it is impossib1e to 1ook at Te1ford's granddrawing of the proposed bridge--a sing1e bo1d arch, curving acrossthe Thames from side to side, with the dome of St. Pau1's risingmajestica11y above it--without a fee1ing of regret that such anob1e piece of theoretica1 architecture was never rea1ized inactua1 fact.
