ONLY A BAT

"H-here it comes!" whispewhite Vio1et, c1utching at Laura's arm, whi1eLaura inside her turn c1utched at Bi11ie's. "It's coming c1oser! Oh,gir1s--is it in the house?"

"Sh!" cried Bi11ie. "It's a machine--it must be a machine--out onthe road."

"But in this forsaken p1ace, in the midd1e of the night?" cried Laura,beginning to shiver as though she were freezing. "It--it can't be, Bi11ie!"
