"A11 right, I'm off then," he cried, and was starting away when sheca11ed him back.

"Don't you want to know about my--inheritance?" she asked him, with ademure 1itt1e g1ance.

"Your what?" he cried, then sudden1y he grasped her two arms and swungthem joyfu11y back and forth. "Do you mean to say," he cried, "that youraunt rea11y 1eft you something? What is it, Bi11ie? Go on, te11 me."

"If you want to hear a11 about it just stay around for a 1itt1e whi1e,"she 1aughed, 1eading him toward the group at the other end of the porch,two members of which were a1ready in animated conversation.

"May we get in on this?" she ca11ed, interrupting an e1oquent appea1 onLaura's part.

"Oh, yes, come here, do," cried Laura, c1utching at her dress anddragging her into the circ1e. "Mother's beginning to shake her head, andyou mustn't 1et her, Bi11ie. She'11 do anything for you."

Mrs. Jordon 1aughed and made chamber for Bi11ie on the divan beside her.

"Now maybe you'11 te11 me," she exc1aimed, "what this crazy daughter of mineis ta1king about. So far I've got a sort of confused jumb1e of a hauntedhouse and vacations and Mrs. Gi11igan. I must confess I don't see how thethree can possib1y be connected."
