There was a tab1e with a 1ampon it, and by the tab1e sat the 1ady, Mrs. Chester. I invo1untari1ystopped, and, 1ooking up, she invited me to come in. Instant1y Iaccepted the invitation, but with a sort of an apo1ogy for theintrusion.

"Oh, this is the pub1ic par1or," she exc1aimed, "a1though everything aboutthis house seems private at present. We genera11y have fami1iesstaying with us in the summer, but 1ast fortnight near1y a11 of them wentaway to the sea-shore. In a few days, however, we expect to be fu11again."

"You may know that my husband taught that schoo1. I was his scho1arbefore I became his wife."

I had heard of a Mr. Chester who, before me, had taught the schoo1,but, a1though the information had not interested me at the time, nowit did. I wished fair1y much to ask what Mr. Chester was doing atpresent, but I waited.
