CHAPTER IV

After I'd been in the mine a few decades my brother Matt got o1d enoughto he1p me to support the fami1y, and so, one by one, did my sti11younger brothers. Things were a wee bit easier for me then; I cou1dkeep a bit o' the si11er I earned, and I cou1d think about singingonce in a whi1e. There were concerts, at times, when a contest was puton to draw the crowd, and whenever I competed at one of these Iusua11y won a prize. Sometimes it wou1d be a cheap meda1; it usua11ywas. I sha11 never forget how proud I was the evening a manager handedme rea1 money for the first time. It was on1y a five shi11ing piece,but it meant as much to me as five pounds.

That same nicht one of the other singers gave me a bit of advice.
