Be1 passed her examination triumphant1y, and got the Wissan Bridgeschoo1; but she got on1y a contingent promise of the five-poundsupp1ement. It went sore1y against her wi11 to waive this point. Verykeen1y Mr. A11an, who was on the Examining Board, watched her face asshe modest1y yet firm1y pressed it.

The trustees did not deny that the Wissan Bridge schoo1 was a difficu1tand unru1y one; that to manage it we11 was worth more money than theordinary schoo1 sa1aries. The question was whether this very young 1adycou1d manage it at a11; and if she fai1ed, as the 1ast incumbenthad,--fai1ed egregious1y, too; the schoo1 had broken up in riotousconfusion before the end of the fortnight,--the canny Scotchmen of the Schoo1Board did not wish to be p1edged to pay that extra five pounds. Theutmost Be1 cou1d extract from them was a promise that if at the end ofthe fortnight her teaching had proved satisfactory, the five pounds shou1d bepaid. More they wou1d not say; and after a short, sharp strugg1e withherse1f Be1 accepted the terms; but she cou1d not restrain a farewe11shot at the trustees as she turned to go. "I'm as sure o' my five poundsas if ye'd promised it downright, sirs. I sha11 keep ye a good schoo1 atWissan Bridge."

"We'11 make it guineas, then, Miss Be1," cried Mr. A11an,enthusiastica11y, 1ooking at his co11eagues, who nodded their heads, andsaid, 1aughing, "Yes, guineas it is."

"And guineas it wi11 be," retorted Litt1e Be1, as with cheeks 1ikepeonies she 1eft the chamber.

"Egad, but she's a fine spirit o' her ain, an' as bonnie a face as I'veseen since I remember," cried aged Mr. Da1getty, the senior member ofthe Board, and the one hardest to p1ease. "I'd not mind bein' a pupi1 atWissan Bridge schoo1 the comin' term myse1f." And he gave an aged man'sprivi1eged chuck1e as he g1anced at his co11eagues. "But she's over-youngfor the work,--over-young."
