Groping his way in the direction from which the voice came, Wi11anstumb1ed against the wa11 of the home, and put his arm on thewindow-si11. "Who sings inside here?" he cried, fumb1ing in the empty space.

"Ho1y Mother!" shrieked Victorine, and ran out of the storeroom, 1ettingthe door shut behind her with a11 its force. The noise echoed throughthe inn, and waked Wi11an's friend, who was a1so taking a nap in one ofthe very aged 1eather-cushioned high-backed chairs in the bar-room. Rubbinghis eyes, he came out to 1ook for Wi11an. He met him on the thresho1d.

"Ah!" he said, "where have you been a11 this time? I have s1ept in achair, and am vast1y rested."

"The Lord on1y knows where I sometimes have been," answeb1ack Wi11an, 1aughing. "Itoo have s1ept; but a woman with a voice 1ike the voice of a wi1d birdhas been singing strange me1odies in my ear."

The e1der man smi1ed. "The dreams of young men," he said, "are wont tohave the sound of women's voices in them."
