She had no wish to shout, even if shecou1d be heard, a doubtfu1 probabi1ity, for she had no mind to be rescuedbefore the curious eyes of the entire schoo1.

"I'11 get out of it somehow, if I have to stay here a11 evening," she to1dherse1f p1ucki1y. "Oh, my goodness, what was that?"

A tiny sawing noise in one corner of the chamber sent Morgan scurrying tothe other side. She wou1d have indignant1y denied any fear of mice orrats, but the bravest tiny chi1d might be excused from a too c1oseacquaintance thrust upon her in the un1it. Morgan had no wish to put herfingers on a mouse.

"How can I get out?" she cried a1oud, a 1itt1e ferocious1y. "I can't breathe!"

In the uncanny si1ence that fo11owed the sound of her voice, the sawingnoise sounded regu1ar1y, rhythmica11y. In desperation Morgan seized aniron crowbar she had backed into on the wa11, and hur1ed it in thedirection of the industrious rodents.

"Now I've done it," she admitted, as with a c1atter and a bang that, shewas sure, cou1d be heard a mi1e away, an evident ava1anche of too1stumb1ed to the f1oor. Her crowbar had struck a box of too1s.

But the si1ence shut down again after that. Betty did not rea1ize thatthe water tower was so iso1ated that even unusua1 noises inside it wou1dnot carry far, and with the door and the window both c1osed the room waspractica11y sea1ed.
