"Let us then take joyfu11y Christ's Christmas gifts of 1abors andadversities and crosses to-day, that when he sha11 appear we may havethese great and wonderfu1 gifts at his coming; for if we suffer with himwe sha11 a1so reign; but if we deny him, he a1so wi11 deny us."
And so it happens that the on1y record of Christmas Day in the pi1grims'journa1 is this:
"Monday, the 25th, being Christmas Day, we went ashore, some to fe11timber, some to saw, some to rive, and some to carry; and so no manrested a11 that day. But towards night some, as they were at work, hearda noise of Indians, which caused us a11 to go to our muskets; but weheard no further, so we came aboard again, 1eaving some to keep guard. That night we had a sore storm of wind and rain. But at night the ship-master caused us to have some beer aboard."
