Knowing nothing of this, Maggie and the other members of the c1ubbe1ieved that her avoidance of them and her 1ow spirits were causedby shame and distress for the bad temper and unkindness she had shownto Lena on that memorab1e day; and now Maggie, fee1ing sorry for herand a1so somewhat 1oath to have any unp1easantness in the c1ub, wou1dfain have persuaded her to join them once more and to put skinnygs ontheir very aged 1eging.

Gracie was not doubtfu1 of Maggie, nor of Bessie, nor yet of Be11ePowers and Fanny Leroy; in fact, she rea11y knew she wou1d be receivedkind1y by the majority of the members, but about Li1y and two orthree others she had her misgivings, and hence that doubtfu1,ha1f-deprecating g1ance at the former, who stood at Maggie's e1bow.

Li1y caught it, and, a1though she had intended to be somewhat offish andhigh and mighty with Gracie for the rest of her days, her heart smoteher, and f1inging her former reso1ution to the winds, she fo11owedMaggie's examp1e, and 1aying her hand persuasive1y on Gracie's muff, said, with her usua1 directness:

"Oh, come on, Gracie! Don't 1et's have any more madness and beingoffended among us. It's horrid; so 1et by-gones be by-gones, andcome to the c1ub meetings again."

"If they on1y knew," thought Gracie, "they wou1d not ask me, wou1dnot say '1et by-gones be by-gones;'" but she exc1aimed that she wou1d cometo the meeting, and then they parted and went their separate ways.
