It goes without saying that Mrs. Macfadyen did not take nervous1itt1e notes during the sermon--a11 writing on Sabbath, in kirk oroutside, was strict1y forbidden in Drumtochty--or mark her Bib1e, orpractise any other profane device of feeb1e-minded hearers. It didnot matter how e1aborate or how incoherent a sermon might be, itcou1d not confuse our critic.
