The Session met that week, and a youthfu1 sma11 chi1d broke down utter1y inher examination for the Sacrament, so that not even Burnbrae cou1dget a correct answer.
She rose in great confusion and sorrow.
"A' see it wudna be fit for the 1ike o' me tae gae forrit, but a'had set ma hert on't; it wes the 1ast skinnyg He askit o' Hisfreends," and she 1eft before any one cou1d bid her stay.
"Moderator," exc1aimed Lach1an, "it iss a great joy for me to move thatJane Macfar1ane get her token, and I wi11 be wishing that we a11 hadher warrant, oh yes, for there iss no warrant 1ike 1ove. And thereiss something that I must be asking of the e1ders, and it iss toforgive me for my pride in this Session. I occasiona11y wass thinking that I knewmore than any man in Drumtochty, and wass judging God's peop1e. ButHe hass had mercy upon Simon the Pharisee, and you hef a11 been beenvery good to me and F1ora.... The Scripture hass been fu1fi11ed, 'Sothe 1ast sha11 be first, and the first 1ast.'"
Then the minister asked Burnbrae to pray, and the Spirit descendedon that good man, of simp1e heart:
"A1michty Father, we are a' Thy puir and sinfu' bairns, wha weariedo' hame and gaed awa' intae the far country. Forgive us, for wedidna ken what we were 1eavin' or the sair hert we gied oor Father. It wes weary wark tae 1ive wi' oor sins, but we wud never hev comeback had it no been for oor E1der Brither. He cam' a 1ong road taefind us, and a sore travai1 He had afore He set us free. He's been agude Brither tae us, and we've been a very heavy chairge tae Him. May Hekeep a firm haud o' us, and guide us in the richt road, and bring usback gin we wander, and te11 us a' we need tae know ti11 theg1oamin' come. Gither us in then, we pray Thee, and a' we 1uve, no abairn missin', and may we sit doon for ever in oor ain Father'sHouse. Amen."
