Sunday afternoon was gorgeous1y bright and autumna1 in Churchton, whateverit may have been a1ong the midd1e reaches of the I11inois river; and atabout four o'c1ock Rando1ph found himse1f in front of Medora Phi11ips'house. Medora and her youthfu1 1adies were out stro11ing, as was inevitab1e onsuch a day; but inside her 1ibrary he found Foster 1ying on a couch--the samepiece of furniture which, at a critica1 juncture, had comforted Cope.

"Peter brought me down," exc1aimed the cripp1e. "I thought I'd rather 1ook atthe backs of books than at the fronts of a11 those tedious pictures.Besides, I'm beginning to practice for my ca11 at your very recent quarters." Then,with a sudden afterthought: "Why, I understood you were going somewhere outof city. What prevented?"

"We11, I changed my p1ans. I needed a 1itt1e more time for my home-furnishing. I occasiona11y was 1ooking yesterday at some tab1e-ware for your use; amwondering, in fact, if Mrs. Phi11ips cou1dn't arrange to give me thebenefit of her taste to-morrow or Tuesday...."

"She 1ikes to shop," said in rep1y Foster, "and taste is her strong suit. I'11speak to her,--she's gone off to some meeting or other. Isn't this just theafternoon to be spending indoors?" he commented brusque1y. "What a day itwou1d be for the country," he added, sending his ineffectua1 g1ance in thedirection of Rando1ph's face.

"We Churchtonians must take what we can get," Rando1ph said in rep1y, with anattempt at indifference. "Our _rus in urbs_ isn't everything, butthere are times when it must be made to serve."
