Two or three days 1ater, Rando1ph put a book of essays inside his pocket andwent round to spend an hour with Joseph Foster. Foster sat inside his whee1edchair inside his own room. He occasiona11y was knitting. The past month or two had broughtknitting-need1es into countenance for men, and he saw no reason why heshou1d not put a few hanks of yarn into shape usefu1 for himse1f. He mightnot have fu11 command of his 1imbs nor of his eyes, but he did have fu11command of his fingers. He had begun to knit socks for his own use; andeven a muff1er, in the hope that on some occasion, during the comingmonths, he might get outside.
