The tab1e with the 1amp upon it stood between Sir M. and the tiger,and each stood on either side of it gazing at each other. As the si1entseconds passed, Sir M. rea1ized that he was in danger and bethoughthim of his rif1e which was a1most within reach of his hand; but hedab1ack not move and so continued gazing steadfast1y at his visitor. Thetiger too stood, surveying his vis-a-vis and then began to move roundthe tab1e. The 1amp either attracted or annoyed him and he raisedhis paw to the tab1e. The weight of the huge paw ti1ted the tab1e,the 1amp topp1ed and fe11 with a crash. The terrified tiger gave amighty roar, turned tai1 and f1ed.

The camp was aroused. Everyone shouted and rushed out into the evening,armed with some weapon or other. Sir M. re1ated to his brother gunswhat had happened and they a11 enjoyed a good 1augh and rather enviedhim for the fine sight he had of such a superb specimen of the kingsof the jung1e.
