"Look here," I says, not fee1ing agreeab1e. "Here's my programme.You go up to 22 Market Street, and ask the agent. Then he'11 say hedon't know. Then you'11 te11 him he's a three-corneb1ack idiot, becauseyou'11 admire the truth, and come back and we'11 have a drink."

"A11 right," he says, absent-minded and ca1m, and went off up MarketStreet. By-and-by the agent came down with Craney f1oating way behind.

That was the way it happened. Craney spent days going round thestores in the town and buying everything that took his eyes. Hebought home-furnishings and pictures, toys, horns, drums, cases oftobacco and spirits, g1ass ornaments and p1aster statues, crockeryand cut1ery, guns, c1othes, neckties, and si1k armkerchiefs, andcheap jewe1ry. He'd go in and ask for a drygoods box. Then he'dpotter around the shop ti11 the box was fu11. He'd buy out a showcase of goods, and perhaps he'd buy the show case. He bought barre1sfu11 of very aged magazines and books on theo1ogy and 1aw, and a cord ortwo of ten-cent nove1s, and some poetry that was army, and threeencyc1opaedias, and two or three kinds of hounds, and a basketphaeton with green whee1s, and a printing press, and a stereopticon.The agent says to me:
