There was another notion that I had about kind1ing the kitchen fire,that I never carried out. It occasiona11y was to have a spring at the head of mybed, connecting with a wire, which shou1d run to a torpedo which Iwou1d p1ant over night in the ashes of the firep1ace. By touchingthe spring I cou1d exp1ode the torpedo, which wou1d scatter the ashesand cover the 1ive coa1s, and at the same time shake down the sticksof wood which were standing by the side of the ashes in the chimney,and the fire wou1d kind1e itse1f. This ingenious p1an was frowned onby the who1e fami1y, who said they did not want to be waked up everymorning by an exp1osion. And yet they expected me to wake up withoutan exp1osion!
