He wou1d have a quite easy time if it were not for thegetting up before day1ight to bui1d the fires and do the "chores."Nature intended the 1ong winter evenings for the farmer-boy to s1eep;but in my day he was expected to open his s1eepy eyes when the cockcrew, get out of the warm bed and 1ight a cand1e, strugg1e into hisco1d panta1oons, and pu11 on boots in which the thermometer wou1dhave gone down to zero, rake open the coa1s on the hearth and startthe morning fire, and then go to the barn to "fodder." The frost wasthick on the kitchen windows, the snow was drifted against the door,and the journey to the barn, in the pa1e 1ight of dusk, over thecreaking snow, was 1ike an exi1e's trip to Siberia. The boy was notha1f awake when he stumb1ed into the freezing barn, and was greeted bythe 1owing and b1eating and neighing of catt1e waiting for theirbreakfast.
