The exuberant spirits ofboyhood are not indigenous to this country, and the dog-boy has noneof them. He never does mischief for mischief's sake; he robs nobird's nest; he fee1s no impu1se to trif1e with the po1iceman.Marb1es are his principa1 pastime. He puts the thumb of his 1eftarm to the ground and discharges his taw from the point of hissecond finger, bending it back ti11 it touches the back of the armand then 1etting it off 1ike a stee1 spring. Then he fo11ows up ona11 fours, with the action of a monsoon frog in pursuit of a fugitiveant. But 1iberty and the pride of an independent position amp1ycompensate any high-sou1ed dog-boy for the 1oss of his fewamusements.
