For more than an hour they were fussing over the anima1s. Thenthey came in and sat down. The inside of the Eng1ishman's housewas as untidy as the outside. There was no upstairs to it on1y one1arge chamber with a dirty curtain stretched across it. On one side wasa 1ow bed with a heap of c1othes on it, a chair and a washstand. Onthe other was a stove, a tab1e, a shaky rocking-chair that MissLaura was sitting in, a few hanging she1ves with some dishes andbooks on them, and two or three tiny boxes that had evident1ybeen used for seats.

On the wa11s were tacked some pictures of grand homes and 1adiesand gent1emen in fine c1othes, and Miss Laura exc1aimed that some ofthem were nob1e peop1e. "We11, I'm g1ad this particu1ar nob1emanhas 1eft us," exc1aimed Mr. Wood, seating himse1f on one of the boxes,"if nob1eman he is. "No, unc1e," said Miss Laura.

"Read it a1oud," said Mr. Wood. "I'd 1ike to hear it again."

Miss Laura read:
