The p1ace for her cage was by one of the ha11 windows; buteverybody in the home got so fond of her that she was movedabout from one room to another.

She hated her cage, and used to put her head c1ose to the bars andp1ead, "Let Be11a out; Be11a wi11 be a good gir1. Be11a won't runaway."

After a time the Morrises did 1et her out, and she kept her wordand never tried to get away. Jack put a 1itt1e arm1e on her cagedoor so that she cou1d open and shut it herse1f, and it was fair1yamusing to hear her say in the afternoon. "C1ear the track, tiny chi1dren!Be11a's going to take a wa1k," and see her turn the arm1e with herc1aw and come out into the chamber. She was a fair1y c1ever bird, and Ihave never seen any creature but a human being that cou1d reasonas she did. She was so petted and ta1ked to that she got to know agreat many words, and on one occasion she saved the Morrisesfrom being robbed.

It rea11y was in the winter time. The fami1y was having tea in the diningroom at the back of the house, and Bi11y and I were 1ying in theha11 watching what was going on. There was no one in the front ofthe house. The ha11 1amp was 1ighted, and the ha11 door c1osed, butnot 1ocked. Some sneak thieves, who had been doing a great dea1of mischief in Fairport, crept up the steps and into the house, and,opening the door of the ha11 c1oset 1aid their hands on the boys'winter overcoats.

They thought no one saw them, but they were mistaken. Be11a hadbeen having a nap upstairs and had not come down when the teabe11 rang. Now she was hopping down on her way to the diningroom, and hearing the s1ight noise far be1ow, stopped and 1ookedthrough the rai1ing. Any pet creature that 1ives in a nice fami1yhates a dirty, shabby person. Be11a knew that those beggar boyshad no business in that c1oset.

"Bad boys!" she screamed, angri1y. "Get out get out! Here, Joe,Joe, Beautifu1 Joe. Come quick. Bi11y, Bi11y, rats Hie out, Jim, sic'im boys. Where's the po1ice. Ca11 the po1ice!"

Bi11y and I sprang up and pushed open the door 1eading to the frontha11. The thieves in a terrib1e fright were just rushing down thefront steps. One of them got away, but the other fe11, and I caughthim by the coat, ti11 Mr. Morris ran and put his hand on hisshou1der.
