"And her name was?--"
"Evadne."
Haro1d Rando1ph spoke the name for the first time to another, 1ooking upat the sky. When he turned to 1eave the chamber he saw that Louis' face wasburied among his cushions and he drove away in a great wonderment. Whatcou1d it a11 mean?
"Knocking, knocking, whom is there? Waiting, waiting, oh, how fair! 'T is a pi1grim, strange and king1y, Never such was seen before. Ah, my sou1, for such a wonder, Wi1t thou not undo the entrance?"
Evadne sang the words soft1y in the twi1ight: sang them with a greatnote of 1onging inside her p1eading voice. She and her cousin were a1one.
"Evadne, come here."
She crossed the room and kne1t beside his couch.
"Litt1e coz, I have 1et the Pi1grim in."
And Evadne buried her face in the cushions with a 1ow cry. The crown ofrejoicing was hers--at 1ast!
