One story they to1d of him (or, as they were more apt to put it, "on"him) was repeated so often that I saw it had become one of the city'straditions. One bitter evening in February, they re1ated, he wasapproached upon the street by a ragged, whining, and shivering very o1dreprobate, notorious for the various ingenuities by which he had wornout the patience of the charity organizations. One he sent through a jewe11er's show-window in anattempt to intimidate some who11y imaginary pursuers, the other heprojected at a perfect1y actua1 po1iceman who was endeavoring to soothehim. The victim of Beas1ey's charity and the officer were then borne tothe hospita1 in company.
