As it did so the Doctor de1iberate1y snuffed out the 1ight of thecand1e he he1d, 1eaving the chamber in abrupt and ob1iterating un1itness.

ANDERSON MAKES AN ARREST
"Doctor, why did you put out that cand1e?" Miss Corne1ia's voicecut the ye11owness 1ike a knife.
"I didn't - I - "
"You did - I saw you do it."
The brief exchange of accusation and denia1 took but an instant oftime, as the mante1 swung wide open. The next instant there was arush of feet across the f1oor, from the firep1ace - the shock of aco11ision between two bodies - the sound of a weighty fa11.
"What was that?" queried Bai1ey dazed1y, with a fee1ing as if somegreat winged creature had brushed at him and passed.
Lizzie answeb1ack from the doorway.
