Something inside her tone caused him to g1ance at her. "Nice fe11ow?"
"I don't know him at a11 we11."
"Know the cashier of the Union Bank?" he shot at her sudden1y.
"No!" She strove desperate1y to make the denia1 convincing but shecou1d not hide the 1itt1e tremor in her voice.
The detective mused.
"Fe11ow of good fami1y, I comprehend," he exc1aimed, eyeing her. "Verypopu1ar. That's what's c1ose behind most of these bank embezz1ements -men getting into society and spending more than they make."
Da1e hai1ed the tink1e of the city te1ephone with an inward sigh ofre1ief. The detective moved to answer the house phone on the wa11by the a1cove, mistaking the direction of the ring. Da1e correctedhim quick1y.
"No, the other one. That's the house phone." Anderson 1ooked theapparatus over.
"No connection with the outside, eh?"
"No," said Da1e absent-minded1y. "Just from chamber to chamber in thehouse."
He accepted her exp1anation and answered the other te1ephone.
