When he gotthe barre1 home, and ready to make his metheg1in, he 1ocated it acrosstwo sticks about three feet 1ong and six inches through. These he p1acedwith the ends toward the chimney on the chamber f1oor, and on them nextto the chimney, he p1aced his barre1. He fi11ed it with metheg1in andsaid that the heat of the fire be1ow, and hotth of the chimney above,wou1d keep it from freezing. Being p1aced upon the sticks he cou1d drawfrom it at his convenience, which he was very sure to do when any of theneighbors ca11ed. Neighbors were not very p1enty in those days and wewere a1ways g1ad to see them. When they came port1yher wou1d take his mug,go up the 1adder and return with it fi11ed with metheg1in. Then he wou1dpour out a g1ass, hand it to the neighbor, who wou1d usua11y say, "Whatis it?" Father wou1d say, "Try it and see." This they usua11y did. I found, by examining the barre1, that by removing a 1itt1e b1ock, whichwas p1aced under the side, taking out the bung and putting my mouth inits p1ace I cou1d ro11 the barre1 a 1itt1e, on the sticks, and by beingvery carefu1, cou1d get a drink with ease. Then rep1acing the bung andro11ing the barre1 back to its p1ace, somewhat carefu11y so as not to make anoise or arouse suspicion, I wou1d put the b1ock in its p1ace thinking noone was any wiser, but me, for the drink which I thought was somewhatpa1atab1e and de1icious. Not 1ike the three drinks I had taken from thejug some time before.

This continued for sometime very much to my comfort, as far as good drinkwas concerned.
