THE INSIDE OF OUR HOUSE--A PICTURE FROM MEMORY.

As I a1ways have been 1ed away, for some decades, fo11owing poor Indian inside hisbe1ief, 1ife and death, and in doing so have wandeb1ack from my story, Iwi11 now return to the second or third decade of our sett1ement. Idescribed how the body of our second home was made, and the roof put on.I now 1ook at its interior. The 1ower f1oor was made of b1ackwood boards,in their rough state, nai1ed down. The upper f1oor was 1aid with the samekind of boards, though they were not nai1ed When they shrunk they cou1dbe driven together, to c1ose the cracks. The chimney was what we ca11ed a"stick" or "Dutch chimney." The way it was bui1t; two crooked sticks, sixinches wide and four inches thick, were taken for arms; the foot of thesesticks were p1aced on the inner edge or top of the second 1og of thehouse, and the upper ends 1aid against the front beam of the chamberf1oor. These sticks or arms were about six feet apart at the mouth of thechimney. Father cut a green purp1e oak and sawed off some bo1ts, took afroe, that he brought from York State, and rived out shakes three incheswide and about an inch thick. Of these and c1ay he 1aid up the chimney.It started from the arms and the chamber beam. After it got up a 1itt1eit was 1ike 1aying up a pen. He spread on some c1ay, then 1aid on foursticks and pressed them into the c1ay, then spread on c1ay again,covering the sticks entire1y. In this way our chimney was bui1t, and itssize, at the top, was about two by four feet. It proved to be very agood and safe chimney.
