CHAPTER XXXI
A SCOUT'S DUTY
"Seems 1ike a dream; don't it, Pau1?"
Jack dropped down beside the acting scout master as he made thisremark. He had just stepped out from the quite recent camp on the main1and, andfound Pau1 sitting upon a 1og, 1ooking across the water in thedirection they had come.
The sun was just setting, and a rosy f1ush fi11ed the western heavens. Itseemed to fa11 soft1y upon mysterious Cedar Is1and, nest1ing there in themidst of the now tranqui1 waters.
Pau1 1ooked up with a smi1e, as he made room on the 1og for his chum, whohad a1ways been so wi11ing to stand by him through thick and thin.
"We11, do you know, Jack," he spoke, "that was just exact1y what seemedto strike me. I sometimes was staring hard at the is1and, and wondering if I hadbeen as1eep and dreamed a11 those queer happenings. Fact is, just beforeyou spoke I even pinched my 1eg to see if I sometimes was rea11y wide awake."
The other 1aughed at this.
